Charles Aznavour, born Shahnourh Vaghinag Aznavourian, Armenian Շահնուր Վաղինակ Ազնաւուրեան Šahnowr Vałinak Aznavowryan, * 22. May 1924 in Paris; † October 1, 2018 in Mouriès was an Armenian-French chansonnier, songwriter, composer and film actor. He was also Armenian ambassador to Switzerland and Armenia's permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva. In his musical career, he recorded well over 1,000 songs (chansons), including 800 of his own compositions, and sold almost 200 million records worldwide. He is considered the most internationally renowned French singer.
Charles Aznavourian was born in 1924 in poor circumstances. His father had emigrated from Akhaltsikhe in Georgia and his mother had fled the Turkish genocide against the Armenians in 1915. The family was naturalized in France in 1947 after a 19-year wait. Charles Aznavourian officially changed his surname to Aznavour in 1982.
Aznavour was one of the most prominent Armenians in the world and has repeatedly campaigned for the country, especially since the devastating earthquake in Spitak in 1988. In December 2008, Aznavour, who was also Armenia's representative at UNICEF, was granted Armenian citizenship.
On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the country of Armenia pays tribute to its great citizen, who embodies the chanson like no other singer.
The coin is also available as a 1 oz and a 1/10 oz gold coin.
Edition: 10,000 BU
